INTERVIEW:

Good afternoon, my name is __________. Could you tell me your full name please?
Sure, my Chinese name is ____, but I also have an English name: _____. You camn call me “_____.”
Can I see your identification? Here you go.
Thank you. Do you work, or are you a student?

Ah, well, I’m a student. I graduated, you know, last year.. from high school and now I’m enrolled in university.
Can you tell me about your studies? Sure, well, my major is accounting... in the future I plan to go to Australia to, you know, further my studies.
Do you have any hobbies or interests? That’s a good question because I used to, kind of, be into outdoor sports but now I like to stay indoors and, um, use computer and so on.
What hobbies are popular with young boys and girls in your country?

On one hand, I suppose, girls like hobbies that maybe they can do by themselves... maybe handcrafts and stuff like that. Whereas, I guess, boys tend to enjoy group activities, you know, contact sports or whatever.
Do people usually continue their hobbies when they get older?
A lot of people give up, I think. Maybe they get jobs and don’t, um, have time. Other people maybe get tired of their hobbies. Maybe younger people and older people have different interests.

Thank you. Now I’d like to ask you to speak one-to two minutes on a topic. You have one minute to plan your answer.

Topic: Describe a movie, which made a strong impression on you.
You should say: what the movie is
When you saw it
What it was about (briefly)
Why it made an impression on you

OK, I’d like to talk about a movie I saw when I was a kid… it was called “Jurassic Park.” I remember watching this with my brother because he always used to take me to the movies. I think we saw it about ten years ago, but actually I bought the DVD two or three years ago so I’ve seen it a lot of times since then. Regarding what it was about: well, it was about a place which used, um, DNA to make- I don’t know how to say it exactly- new dinosaurs. You know, ones which were extinct. It was an action movie, I guess, maybe a horror film too. It was kinda frightening! Um, I suppose this film made me interested in things like science and the past, you know, history and things like that. So that’s why I enjoyed this movie.

Do you go to the movies often?
Not as often as I used to. Because, um, I prefer watching DVDs now.

Now I’d like to ask you a few more questions about films and movies. Are films popular where you come from?

Oh sure, but most people prefer watching Chinese films because they’re easy to understand. A lot of people don’t like reading the- you know, the writing that explains what people are saying, you know, if it’s in English. But people like the action in American movies for example. Um, blockbusters.

Do you think people are going to the cinema more these days compared with 25 years ago?

I don’t think so, because- like I said before- people watch a lot of DVDs.

Do peoples taste in films change as they get older?

Yeah, maybe they start to like movies such as, um, dramas and things. They might not like to watch action films because, you know, they could be too noisy. Actually, when I was a kid I used to like cartoons but, um, now I don’t really watch them anymore. I guess that’s how my taste has changed.

Thank you. That is the end of the speaking test.
